How to Get Rid of Ants Disturbing Your Outside Space
Your garden is the pride and joy of your home. The last thing you want to deal with is pesky ants trying to disturb your enjoyment of the great outdoors. And you certainly don’t want them to find a way into your home either!
That’s why it’s important to keep your outdoor space well-maintained and have an ant control defence system that protects your home from unwanted guests. Luckily, there are many products and home remedies that are easy to use, non-toxic, and safe to use around the garden.
If you’re stuck wondering, “How do I get rid of ants outside?” Here is what you need to know:
Put Your Guard Up :
The good news? The ants have not entered your home… yet.
To reduce the risk of ants entering the home, strategically place ant send near possible entry points like cracks, crevices, gaps and even in front of ant hill entrances. The sand contains sugar and protein, which are irresistible to ants and will cause them to collect the food and return it back to the queen. Unfortunately for the queen, the sand contains insecticide that will eventually kill her and the entire colony.
Ant sand keeps working even after rainfall and exposure to the harsh elements. And it can provide up to 2 months of relief from ants when used correctly.
Clean Up :
Ants thrive on areas of lush vegetation such as garden beds, weeds, tall grass and shrubbery. To help get rid of ants outside, keep your outdoor space clean by regularly maintaining the vegetation and tightly seal any nearby bins with a lid and plastic bag.
Make sure to sweep the driveway, patio, pergola or any other surface around surrounding the property. This gives the ants less places to find shelter and may cause them to relocate somewhere away from your property.

The Natural Way :
If you don’t want to spend a fortune on commercial products, there are a few home remedies that may provide temporary relief from ant activity.
Some popular home remedies include:
- Drown the ants by pouring hot soapy water directly into the ant hill
- Combine ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap, 1 ½ tablespoon of canola oil and 250ml of water into a spray bottle. Spray the solution at areas of high ant activity. The solution will eventually suffocate the ants.
- Sprinkle boric acid inside and around the ant hill. Be warned, this solution is toxic to children and animals.
While these home remedies can provide some relief from ants, they are not guaranteed to kill 100% of ants and the queen. This means the ants could return in a few weeks and you’ll have to start at square one again.
